Ceramsite in Water Treatment: A High-Efficiency Filter Media for Bio-Filters

The type of filter media used is a critical component in the performance, cost and quality of effluent generated by evolving wastewater treatment systems. Of all the materials available, ceramsite has proved to be the best material, especially in the field of biological filtration. Ceramsite is a light and porous ceramic material with special physicochemical characteristics for which it is particularly suitable to be used in a bio-filter environment. We have always been at the forefront of manufacturing quality ceramsite specially developed to withstand the toughest demands of today's modern water treatment systems at Runhuabang.

The Role of Ceramsite in Biological Filtration

Biological aerated filters (BAF) and other types of bio-filter systems are based on a solid medium that a biofilm of microorganisms grows, which consumes organic matter and removes nutrients. The effectiveness of this process depends directly on the characteristics of the filter media. The rough surface and well-developed porous structure of ceramsite offer the perfect habitat for microbial colonization and the development of biofilm. The porous structure of ceramsite has been shown to greatly support the development of microbial communities, improving the permeable properties of the biofilm and ultimately the overall pollutant removal rate.

Superior Pollutant Removal Performance

Recent studies have proven the effectiveness of ceramsite in bio-filters. Ceramsite-packed biofilters have been found to have high and stable removal efficiency for phosphorus (P) and chemical oxygen demand (COD). The total phosphorus and COD removal efficiencies in a 385-day long-term study was 92.6% and 81.1%, respectively. Furthermore, almost complete conversion of ammonium-nitrogen (88%-100%) was found and the total nitrogen removal efficiency was up to 80-86% when proper aeration conditions were provided.

Phosphorus removal is of particular significance. Ceramsite can work well in the adsorption function by chemical precipitation, surface complexation or electrostatic attraction. Comparative tests have shown that biofilters using ceramsite media achieve superior performance – with a phosphorus removal rate of 77.71%, significantly higher than the 33.97% achieved with clay aggregates or commercial ceramsite.

Microbial Community Enrichment

This is a very important benefit of ceramsite, its ability to support the complete nitrogen cycle. It is a porous structure that can be used to enrich certain microorganisms which participate in the conversion of ammonium- nitrogen, such as Candidatus Brocadia, Candidatus Jettenia, Nitrosomonas and Nitrospira. The material also allows the growth of microorganisms that work for simultaneous nitrification and denitrification, a very desirable characteristic for effective water treatment. Besides, ceramsite has also been found to activate a number of genes related to the degradation of organic compounds, which improves its capabilities for treating complex wastewater effluents.

Structural Stability and Environmental Safety

Structure of the filter media is of primary importance in long-term field use. Ceramsite is extremely stable, and has excellent compressive strength, which ensures that the shape will not be changed during operation. Research on ceramsite of different precursors has verified the mechanical strength of the material, and its wear and breakdown rate is very low. Environmental safety assessments have also confirmed that ceramsite poses minimal risks of heavy metal or metalloid contamination in environmental applications.
